Digital Content Store steps up its offering with Born Digital

We’re delighted to announce that our Digital Content Store (DCS) has enriched its catalogue with publisher original content in a new feature called Born Digital. Born-digital content is content that has been supplied directly from publishers to the CLA for use on the DCS.

Now in its sixth year, the DCS is our innovative copyright and course-pack management tool for Higher Education licensees. Since the platform’s launch, it has become one of the widest-used technology tools in the Higher Education Sector, with 145 UK HEIs using it.

The long-awaited addition of born-digital content will mean that over 50,000 titles have been added to the DCS repository, giving users the ability to create high quality scans for their digitisation requests and saving library teams having to source and scan their own content in-house. On top of this, the high quality, accessible scans will enhance the student reading experience.

The current digitisation request workflow in the DCS will not change and the process for creating a scan from Born Digital content will be quick and easy and fully integrated into the current DCS workflow. HEIs will still have to own a copy of the material in order to be able to create extracts from this publisher original content, just as they would if using a scan from another HEI.

For the initial launch, Born Digital includes content from Burleigh Dodds, Kogan Page, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley, with content from additional publishers coming soon.

About the DCS

The DCS is an optional innovative rights, technology and content platform for Higher Education developed by CLA together with HEIs, publishers and technology partners. The platform is part of the CLA Higher Education Licence.

The DCS is, at its core, a searchable repository of PDF extracts created by HEIs or supplied by publishers and a workflow management tool. When extracts are digitised by HEIs under the CLA Licence, they are uploaded directly to the DCS. Once an extract is uploaded and assigned to a course, students can access the extract via a secure link to the content held in the DCS.
