CLA’s Senior Leadership Team overseas the daily operation of the company and ensures that we meet the targets and standards set by the Board. Each Director is responsible for their own areas of the business and the Team meets regularly to discuss strategy.

Mat Pfleger – Chief Executive
Mat Pfleger was appointed Chief Executive in June 2016, having previously held the position of Commercial Director and Managing Director. Since joining the organisation in 2008 as UK Sales and Marketing Director, UK revenues have grown by 45%. Mat has over 15 years experience in the intellectual property and content industries in leadership, commercial and product development roles. Mat was formerly Head of Sales and Marketing at the British Library and Head of Online Publishing and Scientific Information at Leatherhead Food Research.
Eela Devani – Strategy and Digital Director
Eela Devani joined CLA in 2015. Eela has more than 25 years experience in publishing and has spent the last 15 years in Digital, working for brands including Ft.com, Lexis Nexis, and Bloomsbury Publishing. During her time at Bloomsbury Publishing Eela launched 13 products that have transformed successful print brands into multichannel businesses and sustainable revenue streams.
Eela is leading the development of CLA’s commercial strategy as CLA becomes a leading digital service provider.
Jo DeVito – Director of Education and Public Sector
Jo DeVito joined CLA in 2010 and brought with her a wealth of direct experience and knowledge of the education sector. Jo started professional life as a secondary school English teacher, a career she pursued for 7 years before moving into a more strategic role as an Education Consultant at Hackney Learning Trust, a division of Hackney Council’s Children and Young People’s Services.
Jo came to CLA as Schools Manager in 2010 and in the intervening years has overseen improved relations with all sections of the education community. As Head of Education she has seen agreements reached with central bodies to licence all state-maintained schools in England and Scotland, alongside maintaining consultations with representative bodies from higher and further education. Jo stepped into the role of Director of Education and Public Sector in 2014 and, going forward, will oversee CLA’s licensing provision for both the education and public sectors.
Andy Martin – HR Director
Andy Martin has over 20 years of experience as an HR practitioner, with particular expertise in employee relations and employment law-related matters.
He spent the initial part of his career at London Underground, gaining exposure to high level trade union meetings and negotiations in its Employee Relations department before moving to a generalist role with the District Line. Following this period, Andy held a variety of HR roles at the Royal Opera House, the Commission for Racial Equality as well as, a housing association and two employers’ trade bodies.
Andy joined CLA in April 2009, as HR Manager, becoming HR Director in August 2013. He is accountable for the HR and Administration functions within CLA including the development of HR strategy, recruitment, employee relations and corporate statutory obligations such as Health & Safety.
Adam Sewell – IT Director
Adam Sewell is an experienced IT professional, having started his career in 1996 at actuarial and business consultancy firm Lane Clark & Peacock LLP. After five years there, he moved to Nature Publishing Group (NPG), the large scientific publisher where he would work for over ten years with responsibility for IT infrastructure, project management, application development and online advertising operations amongst others. As Associate Director for Business Systems at NPG, Adam was charged with setting strategy and overseeing business systems across the company’s global operations.
Adam arrived at CLA in January 2012 to take the role of IT Director and is accountable for all areas of IT, including infrastructure, development and support.
Senior Leader profiles
Sarosh Daruwala – Head of Finance
Sarosh qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1999 with Kingston Smith, a mid tier UK accounting practice. After qualifying he gained industry experience working for Enron as a Finance Specialist and then for Right Managements Consultants Ltd as an European Controller. Experience was then gained managing finance teams for both UK and EMEA accounts functions at small and medium sized business services companies where the focus of the work was transforming an underperforming finance function and providing financial insight to business decisions and strategy. Sarosh joined CLA as the Head of Finance in 2016 and is accountable for the full finance function which includes budgeting, forecasting, statutory accounts and internal controls.
Heather Walmsley – Head of Operations
Heather Walmsley has more than 20 years’ operational experience of working with data and of creating print and online products in the publishing industry. She has held a number of management and project management roles at various trade, legal and STM publishers, including Butterworth-Heinemann (now part of Elsevier) and Walker Books. At Sweet & Maxwell she delivered their first legal online publications. She joined CLA in 2009, taking on responsibility for the bibliographic database, with more than new 400,000 entries added each year. In 2012 she brought together the Operations team in London and Field team across the UK to be accountable for the end-to-end processes for delivering data and royalty distributions. Heathers’ teams collect, process and analyse data across the education, business and government sectors to allow £70m royalties to be paid each year to rightsholders: authors, publishers and visual artists in the UK and around the world. Heather is also helping to shape the three year digital transformation strategy across Operations, unpinned by continuous improvement processes. When not at CLA, Heather enjoys walking her two cocker spaniels and watching live music. Keen on sports, she supports Newcastle United and watches her son play cricket county level cricket.
