We surveyed a sample 3,024 state primary and secondary schools across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland during 2009 using electronic and face to face questionnaires.

We asked them about their use of digital publications and website content. In most cases the questionnaires were forwarded to schools through our Licence Coordinator contacts in their local authorities.

We received responses from 9% of the schools we approached, with completed questionnaires coming from 277 schools in total.  Most of those were from schools in England (83%) with the balance of replies coming from Scotland (10%), Wales (6%) and Northern Ireland (1%).

The highest group of respondents were Head Teachers or Deputy Head Teachers with the remainder being other teaching staff or ICT staff.

Headline findings were:

  • 66% of schools use paid for digital publications such as online subscriptions or CD ROM products
  • 79% of schools would find it useful or very useful to be able to make copies from digital publications under their CLA licence
  • 88% of schools use free to view websites for information, teaching or training
  • 88% also said that they would find it useful to be able to make copies from free to view websites under their CLA licence
