CLA exist to protect creativity by ensuring that authors, visual creators and publishers are fairly remunerated for the copying of their intellectual property.
CLA was set up by authors and publishers to perform collective licensing on their behalf. We license organisations to make copies of articles and extracts published in books, journals and magazines.
In addition we have an agency agreement that enables us to license the copying of works by visual creators, such as photographers, illustrators, cartoonists and fine artists, when their work is incorporated into those published extracts.
This collective licensing system provides a fair and effective way of collecting fees due to creators and publishers for the reproduction of their work by means of photocopying, scanning and the re-use of digital originals.
CLA also has agreements with similar organisations in most major international territories enabling us to license the work of overseas rights holders and collect fees from overseas for the copying of UK rights holders works.
CLA are also a leading member of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO) and complies with the IFRRO Code of Conduct and other international standards that make the exchange of fees and data more efficient and cost effective.
