Who we are

We are owned by authors and publishers and we protect the value of their creativity by enabling them to get a fair reward when their works are copied.

We license organisations to copy articles and extracts from books, journals, magazines and digital publications.

Our licences permit the photocopying, scanning and emailing of articles from these publications without having to seek permission from the copyright owner each time.

Our licences provide easy, legal access to trade and consumer magazines, journals, books, law reports, press cuttings, electronic and online publications and more.

CLA is a leading member of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO) (http://www.ifrro.org/).

CLA was set up in 1983 by the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society Ltd. (ALCS) (www.alcs.co.uk) and the Publishers' Licensing Society Ltd. (PLS) (www.pls.org.uk) to perform collective licensing on their behalf. It provides a fair and effective way of collecting fees due to authors and publishers for the reproduction of their work.

CLA also has an agency agreement with the Design and Artists Copyright Society Ltd.(DACS) (www.dacs.org.uk) that enables CLA to license the copying of artistic works on their behalf.
