Q What is a survey?
A Each year CLA selects a number of licensed organisations to participate in a data collection exercise to help us to find out what is either being copied or available to copy.

Q Why does CLA hold surveys?
A Purely to provide information to help us to fairly reward the authors, publishers and visual creators whose work is being copied by licensed organisations.
Q How many authors and publishers are rewarded as a result of surveys?
A In 2008-09 money was distributed to 70,000 authors and 10,000 publishers
Q How much money is distributed per annum as a result of surveys?
A In 2008-09 £16.5M was distributed to 70,000 authors, £27.1M to over 10,000 publishers and £5.3M to international reproduction rights organisations using data collected during surveys.
Q How often can I expect to be selected for a survey and how do you choose the organisation?
A We choose customers by random selection within independently-advised statistical criteria. We will only make a return visit once all other organisations within a specified sector have participated in a survey. A survey will typically last from 4-10 weeks, dependent on the sector.
Q How easy is it to participate in surveys?
A Very, we employ several survey methodologies but all are designed to cause the least administrative work for our customers. All customer organisations selected for survey are fully briefed by a member of our surveys' field team. Survey instructions are easy to understand - publicity material and full information is provided
Q What information should be included in the CLA survey?
A Click here to download a simple guide to what data should be included in your survey returns, including sources of digital material.
Q Is the information provided during surveys by customers, confidential and secure?
A Yes, information is secure and treated confidentially, being aggregated for distribution purposes. Information obtained during surveys is used only to assist in the distribution of licence fee monies.
Q How does the survey information affect the calculation of the licence fee?
A Survey information is used solely to inform the distribution of monies to CLA's rights holders and has no effect on the licence fee. The licence fee is calculated based on number of employees, staff or students in an organisation, multiplied by the rate card unit fee.
Q Are surveys used as a policing or inspection exercise in the use of the CLA licence?
A No, they are used purely to collect information to enable distribution to our rights holders but members of our surveys' field team are happy to answer any questions on the licence, CLA or copyright in general, during the survey period.
